Charnel House

Now THIS is old-school horror.

The Charnel House is creepy, bizarre, disturbing, and the kind of story that starts with something strange and just keeps getting worse.

The whole thing has this wonderfully unsettling feeling hanging over it. You know pretty early that something is seriously wrong, but figuring out exactly what is happening is where the fun begins. And because this is Graham Masterton, things eventually get weird, gruesome, and completely over the top.

Which, honestly, I was here for. 😂

What I really enjoyed was the atmosphere. There's something about older horror that just hits differently. It doesn't try too hard to explain away every creepy little thing. Sometimes something horrible is happening and you just have to accept that you're along for the ride.

There were definitely moments where I thought, What on earth am I reading? But those were also some of my favorite parts.

It's not a perfect book. Some parts feel dated, and you definitely have to remember when it was written. But if you can overlook that, there's a wonderfully strange supernatural horror story underneath it all.

Dark secrets? ✔️Creepy house? ✔️Supernatural weirdness? ✔️Things that probably should have stayed buried? ✔️Me continuing to read even though absolutely nothing good can come from any of this? Obviously. 😂

If you like vintage horror that isn't afraid to get strange, nasty, and downright creepy, The Charnel House is worth picking up.

Just maybe don't read it while you're alone in an old house.
