Auntie Mame follows young Patrick, who gets sent to live with his wildly unconventional aunt in New York after his father dies. And Mame is… a lot—in the best way. She’s dramatic, glamorous, impulsive, and constantly reinventing her life. One minute she’s throwing extravagant parties, the next she’s broke, then she’s off chasing some new passion like it’s the only thing that matters. What makes this book so enjoyable is how funny and sharp it is. The humor still holds up, and Mame’s personality just jumps off the page. She’s the kind of character who completely takes over every scene—larger than life, a little ridiculous, but also kind of inspiring in how she refuses to live by anyone else’s rules.
There’s also a surprising amount of heart underneath all the humor. At its core, it’s about growing up, finding yourself, and learning how to live boldly—even when things fall apart.
It’s definitely a bit dated in places, but if you go in expecting that, it’s easy to just enjoy the ride.
