Tall Oaks ended up being so much more emotional and character-focused than I expected. It starts with the disappearance of a little boy, but the story quickly becomes about this messy small town and all the people trying to deal with grief, secrets, loneliness, and their own problems.

What I really liked was how alive the town felt. Every character had something weird, sad, funny, or complicated going on, and somehow Chris Whitaker makes all of it work together. There’s definitely darkness in the story, but there’s also this dry humor running through it that kept it from feeling too heavy.

A few characters genuinely made me laugh, while others completely wrecked me emotionally. The balance between heartbreak and humor was honestly one of the best parts of the book for me.

The mystery itself kept me interested, but I stayed for the atmosphere and the people. It’s one of those books where the town almost becomes its own character. If you like small-town mysteries that feel emotional, gritty, and a little offbeat, this one is definitely worth reading.
