Gregg Olsen’s The Deep Dark honestly surprised me with how emotional and intense it was. Even though it’s nonfiction, it reads almost like a suspense novel at times. The book follows the real-life Sunshine Mine disaster, and Olsen does such a good job showing not just what happened underground, but also the lives of the miners and the families waiting above ground.

What stuck with me most was how personal it felt. You really feel the fear, exhaustion, and hope during the rescue attempts, and some moments were genuinely heartbreaking. Olsen keeps the story moving without making it feel overly technical or heavy, which made it really easy to get pulled into.

It’s definitely a darker read because you know it’s a true tragedy, but it’s also a really powerful story about survival, community, and resilience. If you like true crime, survival stories, or emotional nonfiction that feels very human, this one is worth picking up.
