The Secret Market of the Dead is not merely a fantasy; it is a gothic descent into the cost of desire. De Feo invites us into a world where myth and mortality tangle, where the Night waits with patient hunger, and where every choice carves its mark into the soul. It is a book that demands patience, but it rewards with a haunting resonance that lingers long after the final page is turned. Folklore and myth bleed through every scene, their gothic resonance transforming the supernatural into something ancient, inevitable, and disturbingly sentient. The book is dark, oppressive, and achingly beautiful, a novel for readers who crave their fantasy with teeth. It excels in its ability to marry the mundane with the macabre. I did struggle with the novel’s pace. There are stretches where the focus lingers on daily life and social expectation, and the full measure of the Night remains just out of reach.
